International alternative networks are non-commercial agencies which keep up with the advancement of information and media within their countries. They are not imperialist structures that are internally controlled. They are independent noncommercial options that are attempting to bring multimedia into the 21st Century. They started in the 1990s. Today, they comprise many forms of media such as videos and news websites. Many have turned into multinational enterprises and are an essential element of any democratic media strategy.

They are united by their non-commercial ethos, and opposition to imperialist power systems. They spread their ideas by organizing information and communication reform efforts and promoting an inclusive and democratic Internet. They also develop new communication infrastructures that support local, regional and global developments in relation to social movements.

The strength of these networks is realized in cooperation, and through the organization of campaigns for social movements, as well as media reform campaigns that alter information and communication to the benefit of everyone. They are developing a complex network of regional, local (especially south-south) and transnational links which bypass colonial old links and power dynamics.

These international networks continue to create regional connections, while also promoting the democratization and reforms in information and communications. They have become a vital part of the fight for better human rights as well as sustainability of www.inafi-la.org/2020/07/26/international-alternative-networks-of-financial-institutions-helping-with-sustainable-development/ the environment.
